Getting started on your registration journey
In order to begin your internship you must first secure a placement which will offer psychological practice for a minimum of 17 hours per week. It need not be a paid position but it must offer the necessary psychological experiences for you to develop the competencies set out by the Registration Board. This includes the opportunity for direct client contact as well as client related activities requiring psychological services.
You will need the opportunity to develop your psychological skills such as assessment, diagnosis, report writing, therapeutic intervention, counselling, case planning, consultation and referral. The Board approve placements based on the duties you will perform as opposed to your job title. It is expected that you will work 34 hours per week for 44 weeks each year if you wish to be considered full time.
On the third Saturday of each month, 10am -11am, Mind Connection hosts an open forum for individuals seeking information about Psychologist Registration. These sessions are a great opportunity for you to find out how to prepare for your internship. It includes advice on how to find a suitable placement, expectations of the Psychology Board and ways for you to ensure you get the most from the supervision process.
